The Magnificent Wat Phra That Doi Suthep: A Lesson in Buddhism

January 10, 2026

The Life-Changing Lesson

Our day in Chiang Mai started with what would become one of the most profound experiences of our entire journey - a lesson on Buddhism with a monk. In a quiet temple setting, we learned about the core principles that guide millions of people in their daily lives:

  • Simplicity - finding contentment with less, freeing ourselves from material attachments

  • Mindfulness - being present in each moment, aware of our thoughts and actions

  • Selflessness - understanding our connection to others and the importance of compassion

The monk's gentle wisdom, delivered in a calm and thoughtful manner, was so powerful it brought tears to my eyes. This wasn't just a lecture about religion - it was a profound reminder of what truly matters in life.

Ascending to Doi Suthep

With our hearts full from the morning's lesson, we made our way up the mountain to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of Thailand's most sacred temples. The journey took us 3,300 feet above sea level by transport and cable car, the landscape transforming as we climbed into the misty mountains.

Exploring the Gilded Temple

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a spectacular gilded structure that has stood on this mountain since the 14th century. The main stupa, a 35-meter gold-plated pagoda, dominates the temple complex and can be seen glinting in the sunlight from miles away.

We walked clockwise around the main pagoda (walking clockwise is the traditional way to pay respect and receive blessings). The calming chanting of monks filled the air as we circled, creating an atmosphere of deep tranquility. Near the temple, we learned about the white elephant shrine and the legend of how this sacred site was chosen - a white elephant carrying a relic of the Buddha climbed this mountain and trumpeted three times before dying, marking the spot where the temple should be built.

Travel Tips

  • Attend the monk's lesson if possible - it's a very moving, life-changing experience

  • Walk clockwise around the main pagoda for blessings

  • Check if a cable car/transport is available for mountain temples like Doi Suthep

  • Dress modestly - this is an active place of worship

  • Take time to sit and absorb the peaceful atmosphere

Standing before the spectacular gilded temple, listening to the monks chant, brought a profound sense of peace. This temple and the morning's lesson are absolutely unmissable highlights of any trip to Chiang Mai.
