Which airport you actually want
Tanzania has three airports a visitor is likely to use, and picking the wrong one adds a long drive or an extra flight.
- Kilimanjaro International (JRO) is the gateway to the northern safari circuit. It sits between Arusha and Moshi, roughly 46 km from Arusha, and it is the closest international airport to the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire. If your safari starts in Arusha, this is your airport.
- Zanzibar (ZNZ) serves the island. If your trip finishes with beach time, this is where you leave from.
- Dar es Salaam (DAR) is the largest airport but sits well south of the northern parks. It suits southern itineraries and beach holidays more than a northern safari.
Driving times from Kilimanjaro give a sense of the distances involved: Tarangire is roughly two hours by road, the Ngorongoro area around four, and the central Serengeti six to eight. Many itineraries use a short internal flight from Arusha rather than driving the longest legs.
How the connection works from Canada
No airline flies direct from Canada to Tanzania. Every routing connects, and the practical options fall into three groups:
- Via Europe. Amsterdam, Istanbul, Frankfurt and Zurich all feed into Kilimanjaro. From Toronto this is usually one connection. From Halifax it is often two, since you first reach a European hub.
- Via the Middle East. Doha and Dubai connect onward to Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar. Longer in total hours, frequently better value, and the aircraft tend to be newer.
- Via Africa. Addis Ababa and Nairobi both connect into Kilimanjaro, sometimes with the shortest total travel time.
Travelling from Halifax usually means an extra hop to Toronto or Montreal before the long haul. That first leg is worth booking on the same ticket wherever possible, so a delay on it becomes the airline's problem rather than yours.
The booking mistake worth avoiding
If your trip starts on safari and ends on Zanzibar, do not book a simple return to Kilimanjaro. You would fly home from the wrong end of the country.
What you want is an open jaw ticket, also called multi-city: into Kilimanjaro, home from Zanzibar. Almost every airline sells this and it usually costs about the same as a return. Booking two separate one way tickets instead is the expensive version of the same idea, and it removes the airline's obligation to help if a connection fails.
When to book
Long haul fares to East Africa rise as departure approaches, and safari season demand is concentrated. Six to twelve months out is the normal booking window for this kind of trip. Anyone still deciding two months before departure is choosing from what is left rather than what is best.
One practical note that has nothing to do with price: arriving a day early is worth serious consideration. Group itineraries typically begin with an evening meeting on day one. A missed connection with no buffer means missing the start of your own trip.
Baggage, and why it matters more here than usual
If your itinerary includes a small internal flight to an airstrip, those aircraft carry strict baggage limits, often well below what your international ticket allows, and frequently soft sided bags only. Check the limit for the internal leg before you pack, not after.
