Chiang Mai: The Tradition of a Khantok Dinner

January 10, 2026

The Khantok Tradition

Upon arriving in Chiang Mai, we were invited to experience something truly special - a traditional Khantok style dinner. The word "Khantok" refers to a small, round pedestal tray used to serve food in the Lanna tradition of Northern Thailand. But this meal is so much more than just a way to eat; it's a window into centuries of Northern Thai culture.

Before the meal, we participated in a beautiful ritual - making a small bouquet to ward off spirits. This act of intention-setting before dining has been practiced for generations and connects us to the spiritual beliefs that permeate Thai daily life.

The Meal & The Experience

Sitting on the floor around low tables, we were served an array of Northern Thai specialties. The meal included:

  • Sticky rice - the staple of Northern Thai cuisine, served in traditional bamboo baskets

  • Burmese-style curry - reflecting the historical influence of neighboring Myanmar on Lanna cuisine

  • Chili-pasted crispy pork - a perfectly balanced dish of heat and crunch

What made this dinner truly special was not just the food, but the company. Our hosts were a multi-generational farming family who have been serving Khantok dinners to share their heritage with visitors. Their warmth and genuine hospitality made us feel like honored guests rather than tourists.

Settling In

After dinner, we checked into our accommodation in Chiang Mai. The city has a completely different feel from Bangkok - quieter, more laid-back, surrounded by mountains and steeped in the traditions of the ancient Lanna Kingdom.

Travel Tips

  • Be respectful: The Khantok dinner involves sitting on the floor - wear comfortable clothing

  • Embrace the communal dining style (Khantok means a wooden tray for carrying dishes)

  • Khantok dinners often include sticky rice, Burmese style curry, and crispy pork - try it all!

The tradition, the hospitality, and the unique food made this a truly memorable welcome to Northern Thailand. It's experiences like these that make travel worthwhile.
